TEN BOOKS THAT I WOULD FORCE ALL MY STUDENTS TO READ (IF I WAS A TEACHER) // TOP TEN TUESDAY #3

topten

This week’s Top Ten Tuesday (over at Broke & Bookish) is a back-to-school freebie. I’m going to school in exactly a week *nervous breathing*, and I’ve decided to share the ten five (because I’m lazy) books I would make my students read if I was a teacher. Because sometimes people just need to be pushed into things.

What? I don’t have a secret torture dungeon where I force people to read my favorite books, or anything.

…definitely not.

Throne of Glass

This series is full of badassery, friendship, and girl-power. The main character is an ass-kicking assassin with dubious morals and a thirst for revenge, which would provide for discussion and conversation galore. Plus, the plot has an interesting viewpoint on slavery and politics.

Finding Audrey

I don’t think enough teens understand the real weight of PTSD, but this book could gently introduce them to it while giving them a laugh as well. Starring a shy young woman and her whimsical, constantly fighting family, it’s entertaining and lovable for all.

The Goldfinch

Maybe this would just be for the older/mature students, but this daring story of a young boy who steals a painting from a museum is definitely one of the best pieces of adult fiction I’ve ever read, and it provides an astonishingly realistic look at human nature.

Paperweight

Eating disorders are also an uncommon subject in YA these days, but this book confronts the issue with a main character who’s not exactly likable and firmly believes in the wrong things. AKA, food for thought. #isthatfoodjokeacceptableidk

Between Shades of Grey

Why? Have? So? Few? People? Read? Ruta Sepetys? It’s just ridiculous. If you’re not into long, boring history textbooks but want to learn about the past, pick up some of her fantastic historical fiction books. She focuses mainly on Lithuania and Poland, and struggles immigrants were faced with when leaving both countries. WHICH IS SO FASCINATING. You’ll be hooked.

    • Ooh, you definitely should, it’s an excellent genre. Really helps you learn about the past, especially if you don’t take very well to boring textbooks. And Finding Audrey is amazing, go read it now you silly bean.

  1. I definitely agree based on all the descriptions you wrote about each book that they definitely deserve to be read in school. I haven’t read Throne of Glass but it has been on my TBR for ages now. I have read The Goldfinch and I found it really interesting and enjoyed it, even if it was a bit depressing sometimes.

    • Ugh, it was really depressing. It was hard to get through it at some points, just because it kept putting me down soooo much and I was on vacation, but it was worth it. ALL THE DYING. MY POOR FEELS. Ahh, give TOG a try, I promise it’ll be worth it! That series is fabulous.

  2. It’s Kind of a Funny Story is a fantastic book that everyone should read, I also really loved the movie surprisingly lol. I haven’t read Finding Audrey or Paperweight but they have both been on my TBR for what seems like forever at this point.

    • AHHH YESS. SJM IS QUEEN. I have read the ACOTAR series, but I like ACOMAF way better. I love how SJM fans have this own secret language, and then all the other bookworms are like, “What are these insane acronyms?”
